Last week Google announced an Open Handset Alliance to group world’s biggest mobile technology companies, chip manufacturing leaders, mobile operator giants and software companies altogether. Giants like Motorola, Intel, Samsung, LG, nVidia, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcomm, Ebay and more are combined under the alliance to prepare an open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices.

Google envisions huge possibilities for the alliance as there are 1.5 billion television sets in use around the world. 1 billion people are on the Internet. But nearly 3 billion people have a mobile phone. And, it will keep growing being world’s most successful consumer product.

Android – the operating system, middleware and a set of key mobile applications. Android as a platform will technically collaborate all companies, services, developers, devices and users in the alliance. the SDK for developers is out now and probably it is based on Linux.

What does all this actually mean?

There will be one open platform for all mobile devices in alliance, named Android.

Android will be able to communicate to device features as well as applications.

Developers can develop applications on the Android SDK which will run on any mobile device.

All companies under the alliance are giants in their fields, which ensures the success of the alliance.

Google’s vision for the alliance is really futuristic and well timed.

Like OpenSocial is for social networks, OHA is for mobile phones.

Being open ensures the rapid and unrestricted growth of the alliance and will also make it a success anyway.

It is going to benefit all, the service providers, the mobile
operators, users, and all companies anyhow connected to the alliance.

Also, Google has announced an open challenge to developers worth $10 million for Android SDK.

All the best, thinktanks

We’ve already started burying our heads into it.

Today i had a challenge in front of me.

To look at the options to provide a virtual machine to run windows on Linux.

i had multiple options

Complete virtualization (virtual machine)

1) Bochs (I have used it a few years back and found it good, but it only lacked a graphical configuration manager)

2) VMWARE (one of the best in terms of ease of use but i have to reject it in due to its licensing)

3) XEN (text on net says a lot about it but till now i am unable to
establish a xen server what i want to do is to set a windows guest but
i have not found an option for it till now.)

then a site came into view the screen shots seems quite impressive and so came the fourth option in my mind

4) innotek virtualbox (although its proprietary in its fullest, but
a limited version is also released in GPL, and both versions are free
for educational and not for commercial use.)

See more about the latest version of virtualbox here

emulation

5) Wine – a nice piece of software, till now i have been able to succesfully run

i) macromedia dreamweaver 8.0

ii) adobe photoshop cs2 tryout

iii) winzip, winrar and other compression tools

6) DOSBOX

Well i have been dieing to try my hands on those nice games
available to me during the good old days of dos, which includes jazz
jackrabbit and others which i was unable to on XP, even under
compatibility mode.

This nifty utility is now installed on both my windows and Linux box
and is helping me run those old applications which worked on dos only
(or at most win98) environment.

registered now at the moment I am writing this post. Organized on the
lines of Bar Camps, OSS Camps are intense events with discussions,
presentations, and interactions with the participants. Motivated by the
desire of learning by sharing and to share your work with the
communtiy, OSS Camps are not-for-profit events.

Here are 10 reasons any Open Source Software lover must attend this:

The gathering has been enough on the wiki and it seems clearly that OSSCamp is going to be a success now.

You will get a chance to meet different people working at different places on different Open Source Technologies

Open Source is the future of technology

Open Source supporters are eventually open minded too. So, obv. they will be sharing lots of valuable information.

You will get a platform to share and publicize your efforts and skill.

Others will get to know you and learn from your work too.

May be you’ll stop reinventing the wheel in some of the work you have to do and others have done.

There are different camps on different hot technologies like RoR, PHP, MySql, Web 2.0, Python, Apache etc.

There are lots of websites talking about it.

You want to attend it.

The venue for this OSSCamp has been decided now and sponsored by Impetus, Noida.

Impetus Infotech (India) Pvt. Ltd.

Debian
is undoubtedly the best tool for the administrator’s, but in recent
times Ubuntu a FORK of Debian project has emerged as a leading flag
bearer in the field of Desktop environment.

Being an avid user of Debian I though about having a look at this distro.
Few thinks that came to my immediate notice were

+ A nice and sleek GUI interface

+ A simple and elegant theme from start to end.

+ Effective usage of latest developments in GUI including (Compiz, bootsplash and many others.)

+ A lot of work has been done in terms of GUI based tools including a lot of custom applets.

+ Work done by UBUNTU team is back ported in the Debian which
include the live-initramfs (casper – livecdmaker). Migration assistance
etc.

+ If you don’t want to migrate now and still wish to have a taste of
open source just insert the disk in windows PC a nice and sleek
interface is provided to you in order to enable you to install some of
the most popular open source software’s including firefox, blender etc.

+ a lot of support for proprietary products has been provided including NVIDIA cards and others.

- Many people still use these Live disk as a rescue tool in that
case this CD looses a lot of points due to the lack of any GUI based CD
writing software.

- In order to keep things simple they have missed out on a lot of features.

- As for a live CD this disk is comparatively much slower than anticipated.

OVER ALL

If we look at the overall aspects.

For NEWBABY it a nice tool with no cluttering at all and easy to start.

But as soon as a person gets accustomed to the environment it needs
more and then comes the problem in terms of downloading the software’s.

So if you want a decent environment to work on and don’t want to get
into the hassles of downloading additional products you can currently
go for Knoppix (KDE + Debian based live disk) and this distro can even double up as a rescue disk with all necessary tools right in the palm.

In today’s world, there are two types of software and technologies. Closed Source and Open Source. Also, there are two types of human beings. Narrow minded (conservative) and Open minded. What type would you like to be?

Any one can visualize today that, open source is here to stay forever and is the future. The reason behind this fact is so simple and understandable. In the development of a closed source and proprietary product, there is always a decision making body (a person or a group) which decides what exactly has to be delivered. They are not so technology people nor end users. The message is conveyed to the project manager, PM conveys to the team leaders and TL to the developers. Now, if the developer thinks that there is some feature missing or some feature is useless or something could be done in a much better way and even if he/she dares to try conveying this message back to the top, the chances is too low he/she succeeds. So, the software is done with all the rings and bells and launched in the market. The user has no choice to get that thing improved or customized but to wait till next version with his/her fingers crossed.

While, in the development of Open source software, the things go so favorable. A self inspired body (a person or a group) initiates the idea and the basic development. Develops it, tests it and publishes it to the world. Many developers and users use it, enjoy it and examine it. They find bugs, either they report it to the developers or they remove it themselves. They find some weaknesses, they improve it. They find something useless, they just remove it and then release it. This way the application keeps getting better without any effort and keeps spreading itself too. As much it becomes popular, as better it gets which leads to make it more popular and again better and so on . . .

So, this way the open source will not only stay here forever, it will keep getting better and more popular. There is no way a closed source product will override its success for long. It is simply unmatchable and can’t be chased.

Among several other projects, our labs are busy with a very ambitious contribution to Indian and later world users. The project is about developing a so user friendly, elegant, efficient and powerful Linux (Debian) based operating system. An operating system that never sucks. As we’ve just started, we just have a vision and strategy. The primary approach will be to provide an operating system which fulfills one’s basic needs (obviously better than windows) and the packages and tools which are really necessary. We’ll try to keep our first version bug free though it will be an alpha.

The project is named Codename Eulogix for now but, we’re looking for good names. We won’t like to rename our baby later so, we need a name which impacts a bit, is short and sweet and is easily spoken. Suggestions are welcome in comments.

Well, there are two parts of a human being. One is the intellectual and another is emotional. What we do at a moment is the result of what drives us out of two while doing the same. And, what we get depends totally on what we do.

You must be wondering that why and what I am talking about. Actually, if you’ve started thinking about it, you must be thinking I am quite right. Intellect and Emotions are the only factors which drive us in our career and our whole life.

At Eulogik, we believe in both. In our methodology, we love following our logics and we do it with emotions. We also care about both intellect and emotions of our clients and customers . Our products and services are for humans and that’s why we keep our work logically beautiful.
